Although the shape of the Dombunkers is the same, there are two basic areas of use for them:

• A protected dock for works on U-boats (and small ships). This was the case for two Dombunker in Lorient.
• A protected shelter for special railway artillery. This was in use by three railway artillery batteries in de Pas de Calais area (north of France).
